Sunrise on the Mississippi

What a way to start the day.

My daughter attends an early-morning religious class from 6:00–6:50 a.m. I had the privilege of getting up early, making her favorite cheese, green onion, and tomato omelet, and getting her to class on time. A little love grown through simple kindness.

As it turns out, helping her also helped me. While she was in class, I took advantage of the time to stretch and walk—my usual two miles. Today was no exception.

After class, she headed to school. Normally I drop her off and go, but just as I was pulling away, she called to say the door was locked. I picked her up and we tried another entrance—also locked. With nearly an hour before her first period, we headed home.

As we turned onto the main road, a stunning Iowa sunrise began painting the sky in purple, pink, and orange. Living less than a mile from the Mississippi River—famous for its sunrises—we decided to drive down and take it in. It had been a long time since we’d done that. It was gorgeous—a sweet, unplanned bonding moment. Love grown through kindness wins again.

My afternoon took an unexpected turn when I ended up in the ER. I’m home and fine, so I’ll spare the details. What matters is this: it was a very busy day, and the staff was clearly stretched thin, yet every person I encountered was kind and caring. I’m deeply grateful.

My friends, the world is hungry for love—and you and I have the power to deliver it every day. Research affirms the transformative power of kindness, but I invite you to conduct your own study.

In today’s world, it takes real courage to be kind. And yet kindness is how love turns challenging moments into opportunities for change.

So what will you do today to plant seeds of kindness and help love grow?
